The American Society of Safety Professionals or ASSP was first established as the American Society of Safety Engineers or ASSE. The organization goes back to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire where the death of 146 garment workers was the cause of inadequate safety measures. It was only recently in June of 2018 that ASSE was renamed as ASSP. It is a worldwide organization that has about 37,000 professional occupational safety and health (OSH) members. These professionals do research, management, supervision, and consultation tasks on work-related OSH concerns across industries, education, and government.
